Victoria is not short of ideas.

Over the past several years, governments, community organizations, businesses and residents have developed thoughtful plans for housing, transportation, public safety, economic development, climate action and community well-being. They represent thousands of hours of research, consultation and public engagement.

The challenge is no longer deciding what to do. It is delivering results.

Complex issues such as housing affordability, homelessness, public safety and transportation are interconnected. Progress in one area often depends on progress in another, making implementation every bit as important as policy.

Successful organizations set clear priorities, measure performance, adapt when needed and remain accountable. Municipal governments should do the same. Residents deserve to know how initiatives are progressing, what outcomes are being achieved and whether public investments are delivering value.

As financial pressures grow, every major initiative should include clear objectives, realistic timelines, measurable performance indicators and regular public reporting.

Victoria is one of Canada’s most beautiful and livable cities, with innovative businesses, vibrant arts and culture, outstanding educational institutions and engaged communities. Those strengths provide an excellent foundation for the future.

Planning matters. But plans alone do not improve housing affordability, strengthen public safety or support local businesses. Those improvements come through disciplined implementation, collaboration and continuous improvement.

The goal is not simply to produce more plans. It is to achieve better results for all of us who call Victoria’s 12 neighbourhoods home.
